How to swap muriatic acid out of your etching, masonry and hard-water work — and what changes in your process when you do.

Muriatic acid works, but it costs you in ventilation, PPE, equipment corrosion, storage rules and risk. PUREETCH is strong enough to etch or remove concrete and mortar and easily replaces muriatic acid in any situation, yet it poses no threat to personnel, equipment or the environment. Diluted with water it steps down into a tile and grout cleaner, a toilet bowl cleaner, or a window cleaner for hard water buildup — so one concentrate covers the aggressive end and the maintenance end of the same job list.

What you need on the truck

  • Acid-safe or standard pump-up sprayer dedicated to prep work
  • Stiff masonry brush and a grout brush
  • Flood-rinse hose or pressure washer with a rinse tip
  • Plastic sheeting and tape for glass, trim and fixtures
  • Gloves, eye protection and a profile gauge or coating spec if you are prepping for a finish

Dilution: Published dilution for every EcoBlend concentrate: light cleaning 20:1, general cleaning 10:1, heavy cleaning 5:1. Etching and mortar removal live at the heavy end; grout, fixtures and hard-water glass usually only need 20:1.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Decide what the surface actually needs

    Etching for a coating, removing mortar smears, or clearing mineral and hard-water buildup are three different targets. Naming the target sets your ratio, your dwell and how aggressively you rinse.

  2. 2

    Match the ratio to that target, not to habit

    Crews switching from acid tend to over-mix out of reflex. Start at the weakest ratio that moves the deposit on a test patch and step up only where the surface proves it needs it.

    Mask glass, metal trim and fixtures

    Even with a product that is not a threat to equipment, dried residue on glass and anodised trim means extra work. Sheet what you can, and pre-wet what you cannot.

    Pre-wet the surface and the runoff path

    A damp surface keeps the product working on the deposit instead of soaking into dry pores, and a pre-wet path keeps runoff from concentrating anywhere it collects.

    Apply, dwell and agitate in small sections

    Work sections you can rinse before anything dries. Brush while wet — mortar smears and mineral crust release with agitation far more predictably than with a stronger mix.

    Flood rinse thoroughly

    Rinse with real volume, following the runoff path you planned, and keep rinsing until the water runs clear. Residue left in grout joints or a concrete profile is what shows up later as a shadow or a coating failure.

    Verify the profile before you coat

    If a sealer or coating follows, check the surface profile and moisture against the coating manufacturer's specification before anything goes down. Etched-and-not-verified is how prep work gets redone.

Mistakes that cost you the job

  • Mixing at acid-era strength out of habit instead of testing at 20:1 first
  • Letting product dry on masonry, tile or glass
  • Under-rinsing, so residue stays in grout joints and the concrete profile
  • Coating over a surface whose profile and moisture were never checked
  • Skipping the test patch on decorative or historic masonry

Questions we get asked

Is it really a one-for-one replacement for muriatic acid?
This strength easily replaces muriatic acid in any situation, yet poses no threat to personnel, equipment or the environment. Your process changes mainly in PPE burden, storage and rinse handling — not in what the product can remove.
Can the same drum handle light maintenance cleaning?
Yes. Diluted with water it works as a tile and grout cleaner, a toilet bowl cleaner, or a window cleaner for hard water buildup, so one concentrate covers both ends of the job.
Will it damage my sprayer or pressure washer?
It poses no threat to equipment, which is one of the main reasons crews move away from acid. Still rinse your applicator after use, as you would with any concentrate.
